SECRETS FROM THE TOMB
This is the secrets page, what follows is a breakdown of some our songs and their inspirations.
RETURN TO NATIONS
SHOCK & AWE
This noise intro, comprised of a dual Kaoss pad attack, started off many of our live sets in 2010-- so it seemed only fitting to start off our 2011 album.
SKETCHES OF SPRAIN
Welcome to the world of dance-shred.... Simultaneous Kaoss pad drum beat and synth guitar riff melded with bass-madness and drum-kill. It's a sprain to the brain. Played live throughout 2010.
SUPEREGO RELOCATION PROGRAM
Genre flippage We Be style, somber verse, smiley shred chorus, this song features lots of verse overdubs in the style of our former band Bm RELOCATION PROGRAM, hence the song title.
ROBINSON CONTRAPTION vs. GOLDBERG DEVICE
This song promises to twist your head like none before it. The title is a visual representation of the music. Live debuted in early 2011.
THE OTHER SIDE OF SILENCE
From pan-pipes to head squeeze timing verse and head-bopping chorus, this song is an aromatic atmospheric adventure. Played for the first time in San Francisco in May 22, 2010. Part of the tour set over summer 2010. Working title was "Jamie Lee Courteous".
PICA CHEW
Formerly known as 'Epic' due to the over the top 'chorus'. Pretty straight ahead in full force...
FAT MAN ON A PLANE
A tongue in cheek homage to the original neo-classical shredder and the Enola Gay...
NIGHT OF THE SHITEHAWKS
Driving riffs, dub and insanity. Secret Voice Tape featured in dubby breakdown.
MASKS
WILHELM SCREAM DREAM TEAM
Myke brought in the bass line and general structure, Graeme added the bumblebee picking, Wilhelm Scream and the verse melody, Ilk supplied the groove and Distant Drums. The scream is triggered from a Boss Loop Station when we play this song live.
DROID POEM
The organ-like bass Myke wrote was the catalyst for this ode to droids everywhere. A little more layered than other songs, Droid Poem features guitar-droid noises, hyper active fall-down-the-stairs-in-slow-motion drums and Myke's fingerpicking organ madness. There is even a hint of flamenco guitar at the end (recorded in Graeme's apartment and overdubbed during the mixing session!).
MC WARHAMMER
Simple and to the point, MC WarHammer often brings the hammer down at the end of shows. One of our more metal songs, though not quite.
MILES DAVIS DIALS MAVIS
Myke's love of reggae and Graeme's refusal to let too many minutes go by with out some ridiculous guitar wankery are features of this song, as well as the one legged rhythm of the middle section.
WHERE'S THE MACGUFFIN? / MASKS II
If you look hard enough you'll find the damn Macguffin. Inspired by crazy movies, Lost and Dave Lee Roth among other things, MacGuffin then morphs into Masks pt.II; pt I is still unreleased but may well see the light of day soon.
THE BASIC PREMIT OF FLIGHT
It's all about Newton's Laws... the premise of this song is the cheapness of the Mythbusters editing team.
TYRANNICAL SOUND ENGINES
Known informally as "Jizzy" for reasons best left unmentioned (but not what you're thinking), this song was constructed from the intro drum beat. The spazz guitar and the hip-hop/Bonham interlude followed from there.
SHALLOWED BE THY GAME
This song started as a delay pedal jam, then transitioned into bass fingerPricking, and ended with Iron Maiden on speed. Continiung in the tradition of the previous two releases, each record contains a song that features the secret voice tape and Shallowed is its home on Masks.
ALL-STAR DESTROYERS
SIDDHARTHA & NANCY
We felt this song was pretty 'commercial', though by our standards that's not saying much. Frynrare Fletcher features this song in his hitman movie Mr Killerman. In the promo we get killed. By Mr Killerman.
THE COSMIC COSBY PENGUN DANCE
Often played live in a 1-2 punch with "Shredder of Wheat & Souls" which is dubbed "Cosby Shredder". The title partly refers to Myke's 'Bill Cosby Dance' he busts out from time to time.
SHREDDER OF WHEAT & SOULS
A goofy name for one of our more intense songs, and one which has become a bit of a signature tune. If you're going to shred, it might as well be wheat or souls.
DEBACLE
From the 5/8 intro and verse through the spazz-shred choruses to the loops at the end, Debacle is a journey through genre flippage, We Be The Echo style. The home of the secret voice tape on this release.
BUSTIN' HEADS & TAKIN' GNOMES
Or Bustin' Gnomes and Takin' Heads. Givin' Head to Gnomes? Gnome Takes Head Bust....
LUGGAGE
This song appears on both CD versions but not on the digital version of "All-Stars". A song from the Stanislaw era re-recorded during the All-Stars sessions.
STANISLAW STORIES
DISCO FEVER BLISTER
A wedding dance gone wrong.
HYMNS & HEARSE
Commonly played live in a medley with "Don't Concentrate" called "Finger/Hymns"
DRY OR DAMP, I'M STILL THE CHAMP
An early favorite, and featured on a Copper Press compilation. The opening riff was once described as Hella-tallica.... it has to be said that Master Of Puppets was an inspiration, Hella not so much.
DON'T CONCENTRATE ON THE FINGER OR YOU'LL MISS ALL THE HEAVENLY GLORY
Our ode to Bruce Lee. We received a message from him too (see pic at bottom of page). The secret voice tape resides on this track somewhere. One of our oldest and most simple songs, we usually lose the guitar solo live and use the opening melody as a springboard into Hymns & Hearse (or occasionally Siddhartha & Nancy/Disco Fever Blister).
THAT'S NO GOON, THAT'S A SPACE STATION
Not so much a nod to Ben Kenobi as a journey through hyper Zappa-Surf. The ending is nearly all improv so you never know quite what will come out...
DRAIN IN FLOOD
Originally appeared on Cubist and re-recorded for Stanislaw (though some say the Cubist version is better!)
Out of all of our songs, this one might win for longevity-- we still play it live sometimes, usually with an new outro section that is not on either recorded version.
SUPERMODEL SNAKEPIT
One of our better song titles. We're thinking of re-working this song, we're not convinced this version does the title justice!
TOOTH SEA
Originally called 2C. A little more light-hearted than most of our songs. The "We be" ballad?
CONSTELLATION SANDWICH
Some strange voices exist on this track-- a rare track with "vocals"!
UNRELEASED & RARITIES:
"HEADLICE"
Unreleased from the "Return to Nations" sessions. An epic in the style of Droid Poem/Debacle in the making, will have theremins, metal riffs, chill sections and thunder... will be unleashed in the future.
BEEF BATTLE
We've recorded this song several times, most recently for the "Return to Nations" sessions, but for various reasons it's never made it onto a release so far. If you want a taste, fish around on Vimeo for clips of us recording it (during the "All-stars" sessions). Currently being reworked for future release. May or may not be the same structure. We'll see.
SMELL THE POWERGLOVE
An unreleased song from the Masks sessions. Part of our fall 2007 live set, currently the song is gathering digital and magnetic dust...
MASKS part I
An unreleased song from the All-Star sessions, though the song Masks part II appears as an outro to "Where's the Macguffin?" on the MASKS album. This song will be finished and will see the light of day sometime in the future.
I'VE GOT A HUNCH WE'RE NOT GETTING LUNCH
From the Cubist Music EP (out of print). Yogi made me! Our ode to Boo Boo and Yogi Bear. Another re-recorded version also exists in the vaults somewhere.
PAC MAN
Also from Cubist Music. Not really inspired by video games at all, but the title stuck, though the original title of Game Over still works.
WITH EVERY BRAIN IT THINKS IT THINKS
Also from Cubist Music. The verses are driving bass/drum with guitar noise tomfoolery over the top.
